Who are we?
Currently, @geridata consists of 25 core members across the UK’s four nations including:
- Data analysts, custodians and researchers using: Clinical Practice Research Database in England; DataLink in Scotland; and, the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage Dataset in Wales;
- Clinicians and researchers from a range of disciplines in health and social care with an interest in the care of older people.
England
Dr Cini Bhanu
Dr Cini Bhanu is a Doctoral Research Fellow funded by the Dunhill Medical Trust at University College London (UCL) and a GP in London. Her research focuses on using primary care data to improve routine GP care for older people with multimorbidity. Her PhD uses a large primary care dataset to understand the risk of medications associated with postural hypotension in older adults.

Dr Matthew Butler
Dr Matthew Butler is a consultant at Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation. Interests include improving the care of frail older adults across CUH as well as utilizing electronic patient records to enhance care delivery.

Prof Andrew Clegg
Andrew Clegg is a professor of geriatric medicine at the University of Leeds, consultant geriatrician at Bradford Royal Infirmary and Associate Direct of Health Data Research UK North. Andy led the development of the electronic frailty index which has been implemented across the UK and leads a large portfolio of ageing and frailty research.

Dr Jemima Collins
Dr Jemima Collins is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine, School of Medicine, the University of Nottingham who has a research interest in improving care for dementia.

Prof Simon Conroy
Simon Conroy is a professor of Geriatric Medicine in the MRC Lifelong Health & Ageing unit at UCL, he led the development of the Hospital Frailty Risk Score and created Acute Frailty Networks across England. Simon’s interests include service developments and research to assess different models of care for older people and patient-reported outcomes in routine data.

Ruth Evans
Ruth Evans is a Teaching Fellow in Health Informatics at the University of Leeds. Ruth has particular interests in process modelling and process improvement, benefits and change management, human factors, usability and user-centred design.

Dr Stephanie Harrison
Dr Stephanie Harrison is an epidemiologist and tenure-track fellow at the University of Liverpool. Her PhD involved researching cardiovascular risk models and associations with cognitive decline in older adults. Dr Harrison also researches evidence-based approaches to improving cardiovascular care for older people living in long-term care settings.

Dr Dan Jones
Dr Dan Jones is an Academic Clinical Lecturer (ACL) at the University of Leeds and a GP working in the out-of-hours service for Cumbria Health. Dan’s ACL post is focused on the themes of frailty, old age and primary care oncology.

Dr Victoria Keevil
Dr Victoria Keevil is a consultant physician specialising in medicine for older people, and a senior research associate at the University of Cambridge (Department of Medicine) interested in exploring the potential of routinely collected ‘big data’ in healthcare to contribute to our understanding of health and disease mechanisms, support clinical decision making and inform the development of clinical services.

Dr Jane Masoli
Dr Jane Masoli is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and Acting Consultant in Geriatric Medicine. She was awarded a PhD by the University of Exeter in June 2021 on blood pressure, co-morbidities and outcomes in older populations.

Dr James van Oppen
Dr James van Oppen is based in Leicester as a Specialty Registrar in Emergency Medicine. He is currently completing his PhD developing and validating a Patient-Reported Outcome Measure for Older People living with frailty receiving Acute Care (PROM-OPAC), supported by an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship). James is interested in improving quality geriatric emergency care by enabling consideration of person-centred outcomes in Big Data.

Dr Marc Osterdahl
Dr Marc Osterdahl is a specialist registrar in Geriatric Medicine in Southeast London, with a background in epidemiology. Marc developed my interest in the use of routinely collected clinical data for research into the health of our ageing population during my MSc at LSHTM.

Dr Rose Penfold
Dr Rose Penfold is an academic clinical fellow in geriatric medicine funded by NIHR at King’s College London. Rose has interests in cognition, epidemiology, and policy. She is the co-founder @womenspeakersHC and @gerisoc rep.

Dr Sam Relton
Dr Sam Relton is Senior Research Fellow in Health Data Analytics at the University of Leeds with expertise in high-performance computing; data science; machine learning; mathematics. Before joining Leeds he specialised in algorithm design and implementation. The algorithms he worked on underpin many common tasks in scientific computing and data science.

Dr Taha Shiwani is an academic foundation doctor at the University of Leeds following medical training at Imperial College London.

Dr Oly Todd
@geridata chairDr Oly Todd is an NIHR academic clinical lecturer in geriatrics at Leeds. His research focuses on stratifying hypertension management in older people.

Prof Emma Vardy
Professor Emma Vardy is a Consultant Geriatrician at Salford Care Organisation, where she is also the Clinical dementia lead and Clinical Frailty lead for the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. She holds an honorary clinical chair in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Manchester as part of the Manchester Academic Health Sciences network.

Dr Chris Wilkinson
@geridata secretaryDr Chris Wilkinson is an NIHR academic clinical lecturer in cardiology in Newcastle. His research focuses on using large datasets to identify ways to improve the quality of care for people with heart disease, and in particular for older people living with frailty.

Dr Giulia Ogliari
Dr Giulia Ogliari specialized in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Milan, Italy. Currently, she is a research fellow at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust. Her recent work has focused on fall risk factors among participants of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE).

Dr Aseel Abuzour
Dr Aseel Abuzour is a pharmacist by background and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, based at the Academic Unit for Ageing and Stroke Research. Aseel is particularly interested in developing digital tools using routine data to help identify and stratify patients at risk of preventable harm. She also has research experience in clinical decision-making.
Scotland
Dr Atul Anand
Dr Atul Anand is Clinical Lead for the Edinburgh City Region Data-Driven Innovation (DDI) Health and Social Care DataLoch Programme – a data service for health and social care in South East Scotland. He is a Consultant Geriatrician at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, He looks after older patients with frailty, particularly in my orthogeriatric sessions. His own research is currently testing routine electronic healthcare data approaches to the identification of frailty in hospitals, predicting rehabilitation needs and helping clinical decision-making after myocardial infarction.

Dr Jenni Burton
Dr Jenni Burton is a Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Specialist Registrar in Geriatric Medicine, based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. She commenced her post and higher specialist training in the autumn 2018. She is keen to engage with other researchers across the Institute and the University to collaborate on research projects which can help to make a meaningful contribution to improving the lives of older people.

Dr Lara Mitchell
Dr Lara Mitchell is a Consultant Geriatrician at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH), Glasgow. She is the clinical lead for acute and has developed a frailty service, she leads a syncope service in Glasgow and is chair of the British Geriatrics Society Cardiovascular Special Interest Group.

Dr Terri Quinn
Dr Terri Quinn holds the post of Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Physician in Stroke. Terry has a broad research portfolio, his principal research interests are around trial methodology, functional assessment and neuropsychological consequences of cardiovascular disease.

Dr Katherine Walesby is a specialist registrar in geriatric and general internal medicine and clinical research fellow with Alzheimer’s Scotland Dementia Research Centre, Edinburgh. Her main research interest is understanding who gets dementia and why.

Dr Jonathan Hewitt
Dr Jonathan Hewitt is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Geriatric and Stroke Medicine at Cardiff University and a Consultant Physician. Jonathan is Specialty Lead for Stroke in Wales and Course Director for the MSc in Ageing Health and Disease. Areas of interest are stroke, diabetes and large-scale epidemiology, especially biobanking.

Dr Joe Hollinghurst
Dr Joe Hollinghurst is an experienced Data Analyst with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. Skilled in Mathematical Modeling and Statistical Methods, R, Matlab, SQL, MLwiN, Data Analysis, and Technical Data Analysis. Strong information technology professional with a Doctor of Philosophy – PhD focused in Mathematics and Engineering from the University of Bristol.
